Orthodontic appliances, like braces, have come a long way over the past few decades, but they still need to be treated with the utmost care. Eating foods that will not damage braces is crucial to a successful orthodontic treatment plan. Following the rules of what-to-eat and what-not-to-eat can save you time and any pain associated with broken wires or brackets.
There are a few reasons why you should not eat certain foods while wearing braces. One reason is that hard foods can damage braces, which can result in additional visits to the orthodontist’s office. Some foods can loosen or completely dislodge braces from the teeth.
Another important reason is that certain foods can leave stains and/or cause cavities. It is important to have proper oral hygiene habits, while eating foods that will not cause any kinds of damage to your teeth or braces.
Many foods can get stuck between braces. Have you ever taken a huge bite out of a yummy sandwich only to find that bread is stuck between all of your teeth? Now imagine doing that while wearing braces. We are not saying you can’t have a sandwich, it’s just important to brush after having certain foods like bread or sugary beverages.
Foods to avoid while wearing braces:
- Raw carrots
- Hard candy
- Chewy candy like taffy or gummy bears
- Chunky peanut butter
- Whole apples
- Ice (if you plan to chew on it)
- Hard taco shells
- Hard cookies
- Pizza crust
- Thick chips
- Soft drinks
- Beef jerky
- Corn on the cob
- Beverages that will stain your teeth, if you are not able to brush immediately following
There are several foods that you can still enjoy, but you will have to modify them a bit. You can enjoy corn on the cob, if you cut the corn off. Apple slices are also okay. Soft cookies are acceptable. You do not have to limit yourself with everything. Simply be mindful of hard food or candy. Think about it before you eat it. A broken bracket and an extra trip to The Orthodontist’s office is not always fun – even though we try to make it fun.
